Koninklijke Van Puijenbroek Textiel, parent company of HAVEP, signed together with more than fifty other companies from the clothing and textile industry the covenant in which is agreed to collaborate towards further sustainability of the sector. Together, the participants of the covenant represent a third of Dutch clothing market sales. That is 4 billion euros.

HAVEP collaborates on sustainability textile sector

HAVEP wants to work actively on further sustainability of the collection and the production chain. It is remarkable that so many parties join forces and companies, NGO’s, unions and government are now working together on a more sustainable sector. “We are pleased with this covenant, this is a breakthrough for our sector. This unique cooperation is the building block for further European support”, says Rob Kwaspen, director of HAVEP.

Within HAVEP’s newly launched strategy in which durability is one of the most important pillars, undersigning the covenant is a logical follow-up from the in 2004 undersigned Fair Wear Foundation code of conduct. HAVEP strives for a continuous improvement of the labour processes. Not only in their own factories and with sub-contractors, but fully implemented throughout the entire market.

Transparency is important

Chances for improvement become possible by mapping the international company process in great detail. Through the obligation of transparency (due diligence), which is agreed in the covenant, it is possible to be accountable for steps of improvement that come in view and are being tackled.

It is unique that so many parties altogether take the lead to make sure that consumers can buy more and more clothing from companies who are dedicated to the sustainability of the sector. The aim is that within five years 80% of the Dutch market sales has come from participants of the covenant.

Besides clothing and textile companies, other organisations participate too. These fifteen organisations are closely involved with the covenants targets: to improve labour-, environmental- and animal welfare in countries where Dutch companies manufacture clothing and textiles.
